How to Avoid Holiday Travel Nightmares

Its that time of year when you want to be with the people you love. And those people may or may not be living nearby. Many Australians will travel this holiday season, whether its to see family or to take a holiday. This means an increase in flight volume (and price!) as well as road volume and traffic. It usually also means an increase in temper and annoyance levels within your family.

So how to keep the peace, and your sanity, amid the craziness? Plan ahead. Make sure to have plenty of time to pack, arrive at the airport, or drive to grandmas. Make sure the little ones have snacks and activities to keep them occupied (portable dvd players and headphones are a parent’s best friend!) Talk to your partner or fellow travelers to make sure you are on the same page about the way you travel or holiday – some people like to take it easy, others want to be busy and see everything and everyone.

And lastly, take a cue from that guy in the news, and don’t be afraid to play things by ear and be flexible when things don’t go your way. He didn’t want to pay overweight baggage fees, so instead he put on 60 shirts and 9 pairs of jeans and waddled onto the plane. Unconventional? Yes. But he made the best of his circumstances, which is an important tip for anyone who travels.
